It seems as if just yesterday we were discussing bicycle safety and school lunches in preparation for the new school year! Now, believe it or not, the winter holiday season is already upon us. In addition to shopping, baking, and sending cards, there are several key issues to consider in order to make these preparations truly complete. Yes, I am talking about that ritual which has withstood the test of time, gift giving.

Much attention is focused on gifts, merchandise, etc. this time of year. However, it appears as if the true meaning of the holidays has been “blurred,” as we at times succumb to the commercial aspects of the season. Rather than launch into a sermon/philosophic dissertation regarding higher meaning, religious significance, etc., I would rather share with you a simple message. This time of year presents us with a wonderful opportunity to reinforce to our children (of all ages) the basic pleasures of helping those in need, understanding that the size of the gift is not what is important but rather the thought, and that the concept of giving is as enjoyable (or more) as receiving. For the school aged child, it is a special experience to participate with one or both parents in a service to help those less fortunate, such as serving food in a soup kitchen or spending time with residents of an assisted living facility. Come to think of it, why not engage in such activities the other 11 months of the year?

Whether it is Christmas, Chanukah or Kwanzaa or other holiday/ritual that you observe during this time of year, I hope it is spent with those who are closest to you.

From all of us at Kids First Pediatrics, We thank you for the opportunity to care for your children. We wish you a happy and healthy holiday season!
